If you’re new to earring making and polymer clay slab techniques but want to get stuck straight into creating, you’ve come to the right place! I'm Nicole from @thelittlecrafthouseaus and today I am going to talk you through my top tips for making simple yet super cute polymer clay slabs!
I’ve been creating and teaching using polymer clay for the last 10 years both in person and via YouTube. Slab making is one of my favourite techniques and it’s always a hit with beginners.
If you are wondering what a “slab” is, it’s essentially a flat, thick piece of clay, typically in a rectangle or square shape, decorated with patterns, shapes and textures (both flat and 3D textures can be found on slabs). The benefit of slab making is you can make it as large or as small as you want, so your design can be used to make coordinating components for 1 set of earrings… or a whole collection!
Slabs are a great way to begin your polymer journey as you can let your creativity flow and make something that is fun and unique to you. That being said, let’s get into my top tips to get your slabs looking fab!
1. Choose a clay colour palette to work with. This will allow you to create patterns and designs on your slab that are cohesive

2. Pick one colour to be your base clay. Remember this colour will be visible from the back – so choose a nice one!
3. Roll your base clay to be about 2-3mm in depth. This is the best thickness for polymer clay earrings (generally speaking).

4. Be creative! Add clay patterns to make your design. Try to keep these elements thin and not too chunky to avoid your earrings becoming too heavy
5. May the fridge be with you. If you find your clay is becoming too sticky whilst using it – pop it in the fridge to cool down and firm up a bit
6. For a flat rolled design, place a piece of baking paper on top of your design first – to avoid the roller lifting and moving pieces

7. You can use moulds to create elements to give a 3-dimensional look
8. Add patterns and texture by dotting and denting the clay with your tools
9. Add extra details. Explore additions like as leaf foil, paint or glitter to try adding extra details and pops of colour

10. Think about placement when cutting your components out, so you can work out which elements will look good together
11. Keep all the clay scraps! You can use these to create new designs, or you can blend together to make new colours

12. Always read instructions. Check your package of clay for recommended curing times and temps for the best results
13. Flexibility is good. After cooling your pieces should remain slightly flexible, not brittle
14. Assemble your new earrings and have fun wearing them!
