Night sky painting tutorial

1. How to paint the sky

-     Mix Phthalo Blue with Titanium White and apply with your larger flat brush

-     Start from the top left corner and brush toward the centre

-     Mix in a little Phthalo Green and blend toward the middle and right sides

-     Add more white to lighten the blue on the left

-     Blend Brilliant Red, Orange, and Titanium White to create a soft peachy tone

-     Apply this to the bottom third of the canvas – no need to blend yet!

2. How to paint the clouds

-     Once dry, switch to a medium flat brush

-     Mix a sky blue using Phthalo Blue, Deep Cyan, and Titanium White

-     Use this to start defining the shapes of the pink clouds in the centre

-     Mix Purple, Brilliant Red, and Titanium White for a warm purple

-     Dab the brush to apply this where pink meets blue

-     Use short strokes of Phthalo Blue to deepen and shape the cloud edges

-     Blend with a damp brush if needed

3. How to paint trees

-     Mix Deep Cyan and Black, then add a little Titanium White for a deep blue-black

-     Use this to paint trees on the left with short strokes

-     Switch to Lamp Black and paint trees at the bottom of the canvas

-     Use loose, varied strokes to suggest foliage and depth

-     Optional: add pale blue dabs to lift darker areas

4. How to paint the stars

-     Use the back of a small brush to dot on Titanium White for stars

-     Add some pale blue dots for variation

-     Optional: make a shooting star with light blue and a dragged line

5. Add a silhouette

-     Use Lamp Black and a small round brush to paint a little figure next to the tree

-     Keep it simple – just a small shape to suggest a person

Extra tips:

-     Use water to keep your paint flowing smoothly

-     You can switch up your sky colours to suit your vibe – try blues to reds, purples to oranges, or even greens

-     Don’t worry about perfect blending – visible brush strokes give this piece extra texture and energy!
