Canvas Easel Painting

How to: use an easel for painting

Easels allow more freedom of movement so you can take a looser approach to painting, without having to worry about the side of your hand smudging through your work or painting in an uncomfortable angle.

How to use an easel
To start, an easel should always be set up to keep the artist nice and comfortable, preferably have the canvas at eye level or close by depending on where you’re painting on the canvas.

Setting up an easel
You can adjust the easel height with the mast or by using the shelf. Make sure that the canvas is comfortably upright, having a canvas off angle can change the perspective of the final artwork. Check that the canvas is centred and sits in line with the top to avoid any annoying shadows.

With that in mind, you’re ready to create! We hope that helps you in your next creative session. If you’re struggling to find the right easel, check out our guide to choosing an easel here.
