The best thing is that you won’t need a whole lot of materials for this one. To get started, grab the paper you want to transfer your design onto, along with tracing paper, oil pastels, tape and a 2H pencil. For the best oil pastel transfer, you’ll want to use a non-porous paper like tracing paper.
How to transfer oil pastels
Now for the fun part, the transfer!
1. Cover the tracing paper in your choice of colours (try using a patchwork style --it’s a good way to get a fun, variety of colours). Handy hint: to get the most out of your pastels, apply a thick layer.
2. Place your tracing paper down (pastel side down), and tape it to your desired paper to secure.
3. Use a 2H pencil and trace your design onto the patchwork. Keep a steady pressure while you draw.
4. Remove the tracing paper to reveal your work!
Experiment with a range of fun designs from landscapes to animals, the only limits are the imagination.
Why use a 2H pencil?
A 2H pencil is the lightest pencil grade, so you’ll get more of that wonderful pastel colour and less of the dark, graphite outline like you would with an 8B. For more on pencil grades, check out our pencil grades explained article.
