How to: trace an image

So, let’s learn how to how to use tracing paper to transfer an image and how to use natural light.

How to use tracing paper to transfer an image
Using tracing paper is one of the best ways to trace an image as you see your image underneath. Because the paper is lightweight and has low opacity, you’ll be able to see right through the other side.
To trace using this paper, tape the original image in place, either to a desk, table or easel
Then, place the tracing paper over the image and tape this down too. Now you’re ready to pick up a pencil and start tracing.

Once you’ve finished one side, flip the image over so the pencil side face is down, then trace over the image again. This will transfer the graphite onto the page, and you’ll have a fully traced design.

How to transfer using natural light
If you don’t have any tracing paper on hand, there’s another solution, using natural light.

Head to your brightest window and use the bright sunlight coming through as a light box.
Tape the image and your blank page to the window, then reach for a pencil and get tracing. The light will shine through the paper, and you’ll be able to see where to trace, too easy!

We hope this helps you, the next time you’re looking to create a detailed artwork or drawing.
