How to layer oil paint
When layering oil paint, it’s always best to follow the fat-over-lean rule. This is a method of oil painting that make sure your artwork stands the test of time and it reduces the chance of your oil paint cracking.
Start with your thinnest paints first and work your way up to the thickest. Wait for each layer to dry before you go onto the next, this will give you clean layering of colours.
Tip: Drying time can vary between colours because of the amount of oil and pigment, so best to do a test-run first.
Although this may be a little time consuming, the finished product will be worth it! Most importantly have fun creating. You can find more on the fat-over-lean rule and plenty more oil painting tips in our oil painting techniques.
