How to draw a mermaid

Mermaid drawing (pencil)

Drawing mermaid in graphite pencil

- Use the outline to transfer your drawing or sketch it freehand

- Start with the face, focusing on head shape and eye placement

- Build the neck, arms, and upper body

- Sketch flowing hair with loose, curved lines

- Draw the tail and fins with long, sweeping shapes

- Add scale details last once the form is established

- Lightly erase heavy lines to keep the drawing light

- Paint loosely around the mermaid to create a soft backdrop

- Add touches of Violet as you move down the page for variation

- Keep the edges loose and organic for an underwater feel

- Follow the direction of the strands with your brush

- Layer a stronger mix of the same colour in select strands to add depth

- Leave some lighter areas to create highlights and movement

- Paint from the face down to the neck and arms

- While still wet, add in a little Vermilion to the cheeks and lips

- Let the colour blend naturally for a soft finish

Scale painting

- Use a fine brush to paint individual scales

- Work with a mix of Cadmium Yellow, Blue, and Cadmium Red

- Add Titanium White acrylic for brighter, opaque highlights

- Keep colours varied for a vibrant, fish-inspired look

- Allow small gaps or lighter areas to keep the scales readable

Tail painting

- Use diluted colour so the paint flows easily

- Apply strokes in the direction of the fins

- Use Cadmium Yellow, Vermilion, and Blue for soft blends

- Let colours mix slightly on the page for a natural gradient
