Easy night painting for beginners

1. Blended sky painting

Dots of purple and blue paint on one side of canvas panel

-     Squeeze Light Purple along the bottom third of the canvas

-     Add Cobalt Blue in the centre

-     Add Phthalo Blue at the top

-     Add a touch of Lamp Black to the top edge

-     Blend softly using a damp large flat brush, brushing from bottom to top

-     Flip the canvas upside down and continue blending with relaxed horizontal strokes

-     Let it dry

2. How to paint trees

Gradient night sky painting with trees in foreground

-     Use Lamp Black and your small flat brush

-     Paint vertical lines for tree trunks in the lower ¾ of the canvas

-     Use the tip of the brush to create small triangle shapes for pine tree branches

-     Start small at the top and work your way down, widening each tier

-     Use a smaller brush for trees in the middle to keep them compact

-     Fill in the base with black, but let a bit of the purple show through

3. Painting clouds night sky

Painting in clouds on night sky gradient background

-     Mix Titanium White with a small amount of Light Purple and Phthalo Blue to create a pale lavender tone

-     Thin the mix slightly with water

-     Use a filbert brush to paint clouds—start with a flat base line and add soft circles on top

-     Vary the shape of each cloud, but keep them under halfway up the canvas

4. How to paint the moon

Painting moon on night sky gradient painting

-     Use a paint tube lid to trace ¾ of a circle

-     Shift slightly and trace an inner curve to create a crescent shape

-     Fill in with Titanium White

-     Let dry and apply a second coat for brightness

5. How to paint the stars

Night sky painting with stars on wooden table

-     Dip a brush in white paint and splatter for random stars, or dot with a thin brush for more control

-     Use a toothpick to drag star points for a starburst effect

-     Use the toothpick to add tiny stars by dotting into the sky

6. Final touches

Painting highlights on trees in night sky painting

-     Add a small shooting star with a streak of white paint
