Meet Alex Mason (@artbyalexmason), an Australian Artist known for her eye-catching, 3D floral art and surfboard transformations. Her passion for flowers is so clear in her artwork, as is her love of all things creative. Find out more about her bright and bubbly art (& personality) down below!
We can see you’re super talented at surfboard art! What drew you to painting on surfboards?
Thank you! It’s so funny because I live 4 hours from the beach, and I have never surfed before! In fact, deep water scares me! A family friend who makes gorgeous wood surfboards (Bellt Surf) was visiting from the Sunshine Coast and asked if I wanted to have a go at painting one of his surfboards for something different to try.
What creative project were you a little unsure to start but turned out better than you hoped?
Yes, leading on from the last question – the surfboard! I was so unsure about painting it because I was scared to ruin it, and I wasn’t sure how my audience would respond. It sat in my studio for about 3 months before I decided to give it a go. When I shared it online it went unexpectedly viral with 176k likes! Every time I post a surfboard the post performs crazy – better than my canvas art!
Since then, all my surfboards have gone to US collectors mainly in Florida and California. I even did a collab with KULANIS KINIS and painted a board for a special giveaway with them!
Do you have a place you like to visit for creative inspiration?
My mum’s garden is full of native flowers which is where my studio is which is handy! They have a beautiful property that inspires me every day. I also go to places like the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers. I went to Japan last year to see the Cherry Blossoms and Kings Garden in Perth was amazing!!! I saw Banksias growing for the first time (my fave flower) and I squealed.
How did you find out you were a creative person?
I have always been creative and in school I would always win the art award at the end of year presentation nights, but I loved craft in my spare time. I was always trying new things like pastels, crotchet and knitting.
Do you get art block? If you do, how do you tackle it?
To be honest, not really. I do get burnt out though. I tend to have 100 painting ideas in my head at any one time which can be overwhelming, and I struggle with keeping up with all of them! I use my iPad to sketch rough ideas/colours and I try to have breaks and go away for a week or so to refresh or take a break by painting commissions.
Are you more of a sweet or savoury person?
Sweet treats for sure.
What’s your creative space like? Do you play music, have plants, or keep it minimalistic?
I can’t paint without listening to music, podcasts or audiobooks! It helps me to focus. My studio is an absolute mess most of the time with paint on the floor and walls! I could never have one of those “open” studios where people could just walk in because they would get a shock! My studio is my space of freedom where I don’t feel pressure for it to look perfect 100% of the time.
Who are your creative cheerleaders?
Other artists I have made friends with online have been amazing. We support each other and it’s a great community!
If you had to be an animal for a day (other than human) which would you pick?
I spent way too long thinking about this question, but I think a cheetah! I think it would be really cool to run super fast. I would love the adrenaline.
Do you have a fave Mont Marte product?
I cannot live without my fluoro pink paints!!! Magenta, Pink and Purple are my favourites. I use them in literally every artwork. I am begging you to make them in big bottles!
We just love Alex’s bright outlook and inspiring creations! Texture art is already so satisfying but who thought combining it with surfboards would be such an awesome outcome! What else could you texture-fy?
