What does creativity mean to you?
Creativity is a form of delicious chaos – a whirlwind of ideas and colours that dance together to create joyful self-expression. It’s definitely a safe space for me.
How would you describe yourself?
I'd describe myself as ‘completely obsessed with creativity’.
Where do look for creative inspiration?
My art is like a snapshot of my soul, a blend of my Fijian and Aussie roots, and my love for my family. Growing up on the Central Coast and having a mix of cultures from my mum and dad, who are like sunshine and dreams, influenced my work deeply.
I find my muse in the sun-drenched beauty of the Central Coast where I was raised. My art is a reflection of my inner world, a canvas for the emotions and energies that ebb and flow within me. My creations often depict the enchanting coastal scenes that have shaped my life, blending them seamlessly with the vibrant influences of my Fijian heritage.
In my work, each stroke is a dance of light and shadow, mirroring the complexities of my own personal human experience. The hibiscus girls I paint are not just figures in my work, but they are embodiments of self-discovery and contemplation. The palm trees stand tall and proud, not just as trees but as symbols of resilience and deep connection to the earth, and my cultural roots. And the lush fruit trees with playful fruit depicted remind us of the sweetness, fun, joy, and abundance that life has to offer.
My work is a celebration of life, love, and the beauty that surrounds us – a gentle reminder to pause, reflect, and appreciate the beauty that exists within and around us. Embracing who I am as a person has resonated with more people than I could ever imagine. Painting and drawing reflections of myself in my art has allowed many other Pacific Islander women, of all backgrounds and cultures, to connect and see a reflection of themselves. It's truly inspiring to hear feedback from the community finding absolute joy in my work.
How do you overcome art block?
I overcome art block by diving headfirst into creation, embracing mistakes, and letting my hands lead the way.
If that fails, a little break with nature, friends, and family always does the trick.
Where does your mind drift to when you paint?
When I paint, my mind is a calm oasis, a welcome escape from daily life. It's my sanctuary, where I feel most at home and connected to my inner self.
How do you make time for creative projects?
As a mum, finding time for creativity can be challenging but I create alongside my son or after his bedtime, carving out moments to indulge in my passion.
What tips do you have for creating with kids and managing mess?
Let the mess happen in a controlled environment! Provide them with materials they can get messy with, protect your surfaces, and embrace the chaos – it's all part of the fun!
What 3 art supplies would you take to the moon?
What’s an art medium that you love and one that you want to explore more?
I adore acrylic and watercolour paints for their versatility and vibrancy. I dream of exploring oil painting and ceramics, mediums that have always intrigued me.
What’s your fave way to unwind?
Creating, of course! Whether with a pencil, paintbrush, iPad, or camera, I find peace and joy in the act of creation.
